Erectile dysfunction (ED) refers to a dysfunction of the male reproduction.  It occurs when a man finds it hard to get and sustain an erection.

According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), erectile dysfunction affects about 30 million men in the United States. The condition is common is older men.

Erectile dysfunction is also called impotence and it is one of the highest causes of male infertility. Erectile dysfunction is caused by a lot factors which may include diet and lifestyle. The brain, nerves and blood vessels are actively involved in the processes that lead to getting and sustaining an erection.

When any of these is lacking, the penis becomes hindered. For instance, erection requires high blood flow to the penis to keep it turgid.

Some of the agents that trigger erectile dysfunction include ailments, emotional problems, certain medications, smoking, drugs, and alcohol.  Other known causes include heart disease, diabetes, obesity, multiple sclerosis, tobacco, and enlarged prostate.

Heavy intake alcohol is also a major cause of erectile dysfunction. Masturbation has also been implicated in some cases of erectile dysfunction.

Treatment of erectile dysfunction

There are different methods for treating erectile dysfunction. Some of these include:

  • Self-injections

Medications have been developed which men can inject directly into the penis to achieve and sustain an erection. Some of these medications include alprostadil, papaverine, and phentolamine. These medications are injected into the base of the penis using a sterile needle.

This will help the man sustain the erection for up to 40 minutes. Common side effects that may be experienced include prolonged erection, bleeding from the site on injection, formation of fibrous tissue in the penis.

Testosterone replacement 

Low amount of testosterone in men is a major cause of erectile dysfunction. To combat this, a testosterone replacement therapy may be considered.

Testosterone replacement therapy can be achieved by injection, patch, gel, gum, intranasal, subcutaneous pellet and oral medication. The aim is to deliver the hormone into the male to enhance erection.

  • Penis pumps

A penis pump is vacuum erection device. It has a hollow shape and may be hand-powered or battery-powered. The tube is placed over the penis and is pumped so that air enters. This forms a vacuum that pulls blood into the penis.

Penis pump produces erection that lasts enough till the sex encounter ends. Bruising of the penis is a common side effect of the device. The pump may also hinder ejaculation.

  • Penile implants

This is another treatment option and it involves surgically placing devices into the two sides of the penis. Penile implants are only recommended when other methods seem to be ineffective. Penile implants have received positive reviews from men who tried other methods as it improves sexual satisfaction.
